‘THE LIGHT BEHIND’, CARDIAC UNIT, BRISTOL ROYAL INFIRMARY
This artwork, called ‘The Light Behind’, was part of the overall scheme at the Bristol Royal Infirmary Cardiac Unit, which won the ‘Building Better Healthcare Award’ for the Best Use of Visual Art in Healthcare 2009.
The commission included working with the porters for the Cardiac Unit. They are at the front line when patients are taken to and from treatment areas. We felt it was important to have the porters' input into the design, because they had detailed knowledge of what state patients would be in, and what kind of imagery would contribute to a positive patient journey.
It was a real pleasure working with the porters - they not only contributed to my designs in a meaningful way, but they also produced beautiful photographs of their own. We decided to have them printed professionally and hang them in the treatment rooms.
