Mosaics for ‘Bluebell Gate’, Barratt Homes, East Grinstead

‘Bluebell Gate’ is a new housing development adjacent to ancient woodland with beautiful walks and views. This setting provided the inspiration for the mosaics that are set into the footpaths and entrance walls as well as the geometric sculptural shapes that are integrated with the topiary on the village green. Nearby Standen House with its William Morris furnishings was another source of inspiration. The lettering of the sign is based on ‘Kelmscott’, one of Morris’s typefaces.

The mosaics set into the footpaths depict the local flora and fauna of the ancient woodland.

The project involved working with local school children. They drew the local flora and fauna at Standen House and helped develop these drawings to design their very own wallpaper for their school. The children also made tiles so that they had some experience of working with ceramics.
