'Kristina' Russian Blue Cat
'Kristina' Russian Blue Cat
Hand-made life-size ceramic cat, high-fired red earthenware with coloured glazes, and decorated with tube-lining. This was originally a Persian technique of piping on a raised line of slip, and the enclosed areas are then filled with coloured glazes. The raised lines of slip prevent the glazes from flowing into each other. This technique was further developed by the Moorcroft company.
This cat is inspired by the famous ‘Brighton Cat’ at the Brighton Museum, which was made by Emile Gallé for Wemyss in Scotland in the 1860s. the decoration of the coat is referencing floral china designs popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The glass eyes are hand-made in Germany by an artisan glass maker and painted by me from the back for that real-life look!
‘Kristina’ is a Russian Blue, and her jacket is inspired by the Jerusalem Cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum), a winter-flowering and fruiting houseplant, often grown for Christmas.
